I recently had an interesting discussion with a young ambitious golfer with a low single-digit handicap. Such experiences are always particularly valuable for me, as I have always been interested in how differently people structure their attitudes and how their thinking works. This young golfer, whose father I could easily have been, defined his self-worth, his value as a person, primarily in terms of the handicap he had on his membership card at the end of the season. In his eyes, every tenth of a point that improves his handicap is proof that he is worth more.
