4

The golf regions in the province of Salzburg

Just like the Salzburg golf courses, the golf regions in the province of Salzburg are also very diverse.

There is the Mozartgolf region just outside the city of Salzburg, home of the world-famous Salzburg Festival. Then there is the iconic Salzkammergut region, the idyllic sunny plateau of Goldegg am See, the rugged Gasteinertal valley with one of the oldest golf facilities in the province of Salzburg and the sporty city of Radstadt with its excellent golf academy and Europe’s only golf cable car. There is Zell am See with its 36 golf holes set between glaciated mountains and a wonderful lake, Saalfelden Leogang with its two beautiful 18-hole golf courses, the Lungau region with its UNESCO biosphere reserve featuring a wonderful, flat 27-hole golf facility in a mystic natural setting, and finally the popular holiday destination of the Hohe Tauern National Park surrounded by 266 summits, each at least 3000 metres high.

5

The flat golf courses in the Salzburg mountains

This section deals with the flat golf courses in the province of Salzburg that are located to the south of the Tennengebirge and Hagengebirge mountain ranges.

Some visitors are surprised at how flat many of these golf courses really are. And yet, each of these golf facilities offers its own spectacular views of the Salzburg mountains. The two 18-hole courses of the Zell am See-Kaprun GC, for instance, are located in the completely flat Salzachtal valley and almost seem to showcase the snow-covered summit of the Kitzsteinhorn mountain, which is also one of the province’s most popular destinations for summer excursions with its Gipfelwelt 3000 observation deck. At the Gut Brandlhof GC you can play golf in the narrow but flat Saalach plains between the steep faces of the Leoganger Steinberge and Steinernes Meer mountain ranges. At the Urslautal GC, which is nearby, the horizon opens up and the mountains of the Steinernes Meer to the north make for a picturesque backdrop.

6

Golfing in natural reserves

There are two golf courses in the province of Salzburg that are located in natural reserves.

The Mittersill GC even changed its name to Nationalpark Hohe Tauern GC a few years ago. This Salzburg golf course lies in the biggest natural reserve of Austria and of all the Alps.

The Lungau Katschberg GC is located in the 1500-km² UNESCO biosphere reserve. Here, between 3000-metre-high summits and deep valleys at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, natural and cultivated landscapes alternate beautifully. UNESCO biosphere reserves mark and protect especially precious natural and cultural habitats.

7

The slightly hilly golf courses in the Salzburg mountains

A certain level of fitness is necessary to play the Salzburg golf courses in Radstadt, Gastein or Goldegg without e-trolleys or carts.

But if you ask us, every step is worth it! These Salzburg golf courses boast beautiful tees with Alpine mountain views, a waterfall, thermal spring fountains and golf holes to remember.

8

Golfing just outside the baroque city of Salzburg

Mozartgolf

A golfing vacation in Salzburg’s Mozartgolf region is a great opportunity to explore a wide range of activities. The Leading Golf Course Gut Altentann was the first golf facility on the European continent to be designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus. Other golf facilities include the beautiful and challenging Salzburg Eugendorf GC and the rather member-oriented golf facilities Schloss Klessheim, Römergolf and Am Mondsee.

9

Golfing VACATIONS just outside the city of Salzburg

We can recommend several very beautiful golf hotels near the city of Salzburg, including the Romantik Spa Hotel Elixhauser Wirt, the 675-year-old Dorfwirtshaus with its award-winning cuisine and rooftop spa and the Ebner’s Waldhof on Lake Fuschl with its own Waldhofalm golf facility and a picturesque view of the lake. A legendary golf event in the region is the “Seeroas” golf tournament, where players start at the 9-hole Salzburg Romantikcourse Fuschl GC, cross over Lake Fuschl (German: Fuschlsee) in small boats for their “halfway station” and complete the second 9-hole round on the Waldhof GC, operated by the hotel of the same name.
