Golf in East Tyrol - where freedom meets the mountains

Seclusion, tranquillity, unspoilt nature in the heart of the Alps - yes, that still exists. In East Tyrol! Here, gentle, nature-friendly and traditional structures dominate and are not only regarded as an ideal, but are actively lived and supported. There are stories to be told here of rebellious valley dwellers, of living with nature and of alpine adventures in Austria's highest mountains.

Secluded side valleys open up every few kilometres, 266 three-thousand-metre peaks tower into the sky and traditional mountain villages beckon with cultural and gastronomic encounters. The next little adventure is just around the corner: hiking, biking or climbing. Because there is so much more to discover in East Tyrol: the Isel, the last free-flowing glacial river in the Alps, the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest protected area in Central Europe or the oldest alpine pasture in Austria, the Jagdhausalm in Defereggen Valley. You can use an e-bike or simply your own legs to get around, because in East Tyrol you hike along the path of water, from the glacier to the river, past mountain lakes that invite you to cool off like natural pools, always with a stop at a rustic mountain hut or refuge.

In winter, the snow is at home here and provides the stage for extensive winter adventures. East Tyrol scores points with its seven ski areas, 400 kilometres of luxury cross-country ski trails, expeditions into the outback on ski tours or snowshoe hikes or romantic winter hiking trails in the tranquillity of the snowy landscapes. You won't find queuing, hectic, jostling and stress here. When it comes to open space and guaranteed snow, East Tyrol can afford the luxury of relying on its natural conditions. We highly recommend the cross-country ski trail in Lavant - right next to the Dolomitengolf Hotel & Spa and the Dolomitengolf Suites - where you can play golf from spring to late autumn and glide through the snow in winter with the Lienz Dolomites in the background.

If you want to reduce your ecological footprint even further on holiday, leave your car at home, travel to Lienz by train and use public transport from there. Thanks to the guest card, you can use all buses in East Tyrol free of charge. This is the best way to leave your car at home and take a holiday.

No matter which adventure you fancy, you'll be well catered for in culinary terms. In addition to down-to-earth inns and mountain huts that serve traditional dishes with love and class, East Tyrol also impresses with a particularly high density of gourmet restaurants: gourmets can choose between 11 Gault Millau restaurants that have been awarded a total of 22 toques.

No matter what time of year you are here, East Tyrol is always synonymous with genuine, unadulterated mountain holidays. Nature is a place of adventure that offers inexhaustible potential, especially for families. Whether moments of peace and quiet or feelings of happiness, dream places to switch off or natural treasures, everyone will find the time-out they need in the unspoilt nature between the Grossglockner and the Lienz Dolomites.

9 facts why you should choose a golf holiday in East Tyrol

and why East Tyrol is worth a golf holiday

For a golf trip to be a success, you need more than just beautiful golf courses and great golf resorts. The "trappings" are also important. That's why you'll find further criteria here to help guide you. Your feature for golf holiday happiness is not included?

Mediterranean dolce vita with spectacular Alpine views

Stroll through the pretty old town centre of the friendly sunny town of Lienz, visit the weekly market with regional products and enjoy the southern Alpine dolce vita. Where else can you sit under palm trees and drink a cappuccino with a view of the towering peaks of the Lienz Dolomites? Those interested in culture will get their money's worth at Bruck Castle with the Museum of the City of Lienz. Works by the great representative of Austrian modernism, Albin Egger-Lienz, are on display.

Stay directly on the golf course with perfect hosts

The two hotels directly on the 36 holes of the Dolomitengolf golf club offer great comfort for a perfect golf holiday. Both the Dolomiten Golf Suites and the Dolomitengolf Hotel & Spa are perfectly tailored to the needs of golfing guests. For example, breakfast times for early players, free golf on the day of arrival or special sports massages are offered. Enthusiastic regular guests of both hotels report on the extremely high quality of service and the unobtrusive, yet very personalised care. The hosts know their guests and do everything they can to fulfil their individual wishes. It is not for nothing that the Dolomitengolf Resort has once again been honoured with first place in the GolfMagazin Travel Awards.

Discover the power of water

The generous water hazards and ponds at the Dolomitengolf Resort are not the only way to realise the power of water in East Tyrol. We recommend borrowing one of the hotel's e-bikes on a golf-free afternoon and cycling for around 30 minutes along the Drau cycle path towards the Galitzenklamm gorge. Where the Galitzenbach flows into the Drau is the entrance to an impressive natural spectacle created by water. A water trail leads along the Galitzenbach stream, taking you past rugged rock faces and up to impressive viewing platforms. The more daring can take on one of the varied via ferratas ...

Fancy a luxurious golf holiday in the Penthouse Wellness Suite?

If you are looking for an exclusive hideaway right on the golf course, the three wellness suites at the Dolomitengolf Suites are just the place for you. Here you will stay in a 3-room flat of at least 156m² with two bathrooms, private sauna and 180° panoramic terrace with views of the golf course and the mountains of the Lienz Dolomites. This exclusive living experience is complemented by a fitness room, a fully glazed indoor pool and a heated outdoor pool - always accompanied by the spectacular Alpine panorama.

Golfing in a spectacular alpine landscape

A golf holiday in the Alps is something special. But golfing in the Drau Valley with a view of the Lienz Dolomites is unmistakable. You play on 36 completely flat fairways and look out over the 2,770 metre-high Sandspitze or the 2,694 metre-high Kreuzkofel. The four 9-hole courses can be freely combined, giving you six different 18-hole variants to choose from. And if you want even more golfing variety, the journey to the golf courses in Defreggental, Mittersill or Zell am See is worth the trip alone. Here you drive on one of the most beautiful Alpine roads around the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain at 3,798 metres.

Adrenalin and adventure in East Tyrol

Yes, of course - a par after an unsuccessful tee shot is a real heroic achievement. If you also need your "kick" away from the 36 fairways of the Dolomitengolf Resort, we recommend the Osttirodler. At 2.7 kilometres, this is one of the longest summer toboggan runs in the world. This Alpine Coaster whizzes you through green forests with roundabouts at a height of 8 metres, waves and rapid curves down into the valley. If you prefer less adrenalin and more views - no problem. Everyone regulates their own speed.

Golf group excursions in East Tyrol

Golf groups are so enthusiastic about the Dolomitengolf Resort because they get excellent value for money at the Dolomitengolf Hotel & Spa - especially outside the peak season. Six different 18-hole combinations right on the hotel doorstep, wellness with indoor and outdoor pools and three restaurants right in the resort are very convenient! And the choice for an impressive supporting programme in addition to golf is almost endless. Cultural excursions, rafting, canyoning in the glacier river or a trip to the Dolomite hut are just a few examples that will delight golf groups. Contact us if you would like us to put together an interesting programme for your golf group with that certain golfing extra!

Golf holiday in the largest protected area in the Alps

Here you can spend your golf holiday on the southern edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park. This national park is the largest protected area in the Alps and a veritable Noah's Ark for thousands of animal and plant species. Archaic primeval landscapes go hand in hand with a centuries-old mountain farming landscape. Glaciers, mountain lakes, Swiss stone pine, larch and spruce forests alternate with picturesque Alpine pasture landscapes. And if you're lucky, you might spot ibexes, golden eagles or even bearded vultures and griffon vultures.

Take advantage of the National Park rangers' offer and accompany them on one of their guided tours! The opportunity to experience glaciers, wildlife, mountain lakes, wild glacial rivers and all the insider information in person could change your life.

Golf holiday in the footsteps of Indian Jones

Anyone interested in archaeology will find their El Dorado in the Roman city of Aguntum. Here you can experience archaeology live; the forum of this Roman city is currently being excavated. It probably has its origins in a settlement of the Norse people of Laianc. Under Emperor Claudius (41 to 54 AD), Aguntum experienced an impressive boom. Today you can discover the remains of an atrium house under an elaborate protective structure. Archaeological excavations have been carried out here since 1912, but not all the secrets of this large complex have been revealed: https://www.aguntum.at/
