The most dangerous shot comes after the birdie
A birdie should help your round. Yet it is precisely the next shot that can be particularly dangerous. In this video, you’ll find out why golfers often change their strategy after a birdie – and how you can prevent that.
After a birdie, you quickly get the feeling that an exceptional round is possible today. Some golfers become more aggressive, others suddenly more cautious. Still others immediately start doing the maths. Three different reactions with the same consequence: it is no longer the hole that determines the next decision, but the score.
In this video, I’ll show you:
- why a birdie can lead to overconfidence or excessive caution,
- why a birdie–bogey sequence often begins even before the next shot,
- how to consciously bring success to a close,
- how to return to your original game plan,
- and what question you can use to check your next decision.
The crucial question is:
“Would I play this shot in exactly the same way if I’d only played par on the previous hole?”
If your answer is ‘yes’, trust your decision. If it’s ‘No’, you may still be reacting to the birdie.
💬 WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU AFTER A BIRDIE?
A – I become more aggressive.
B – I want to defend the stroke I’ve gained.
C – I start doing the maths straight away.
Just write A, B or C in the comments. If you like, you can also tell us on which hole this last happened to you.
📚 MY BOOKS
“Golf – Mirror of Life”
Golf doesn’t just show us how to deal with mistakes. It also reveals whether we keep a clear head after a success or start trying to force more.
“Never Give Up – Unlock Your Perseverance”
Perseverance doesn’t mean constantly ramping up the pressure. It means staying true to a sound approach – even when euphoria, expectations or a particular success try to pull us away from it.
