Change of amateur status

Change to amateur status
In 2017, The R&A and the USGA agreed in principle on a modernisation initiative for the Amateur Status rules.

Changes effective from 1 January 2022

These result from a multi-year modernisation initiative that clearly identified the need to update the rules to meet today's global requirements.

1) Prizes:
Amateurs can now accept prizes up to the following amounts $1000 USD or £700
Amateurs can now accept prize money in a "competition". However, prize money may not be accepted in a "Handicap Contest" where prizes such as equipment, clothing, shop credit, or gift certificates are allowed.

2) Name, image and likeness
No restrictions on the receipt of expenses or the use of one's name, image and likeness for promotion or advertising.

Competition organisers may restrict the use of logos and advertising through appropriate guidelines. Juniors and students should check with their high school, college or university associations to determine if they are eligible to participate.

3) Professional Activities
It is not legal to compete as a professional if you work as a pro on a golf course or driving range or are a member of an association for professional golfers (such as the PGA).

4) Lessons:
Giving lessons for a fee is not permitted.
However, exceptions include coaching in educational institutions and approved programmes.

5) Reinstatement
An application is still required for reinstatement.
The recommended minimum waiting period has been reduced from 1 year to 6 months. The minimum may be extended depending on the applicant's match history and success.
