Rule 10.2b Other assistance

Rule 10.2b has been rewritten for greater clarity and now incorporates the key principles of the clarifications issued in April 2019 in support of the 2019 Rules.

Rules 10.2b(1) and (2) have been amended to clarify that neither the caddie nor any other person is permitted to place an object on the ground to assist the player with the line of play or other directional information (for example, if the player cannot see the flagstick), and the player cannot avoid the penalty by having the object removed before making the stroke.
The tools available are so great with birdie books and rangefinders that the player is not allowed to make additional marks on the course. This is also a sensible restriction from the point of view of speedy play.
