Lower Austria is the federal state with the most golf courses in Austria.

Lower Austria is the largest federal state in Austria in terms of area and the second largest in terms of population. The state capital is St. Pölten and the highest point is at 2,076 metres (Schneeberg). There are 41 beautiful golf courses throughout Lower Austria. There are 11 in the west of Lower Austria and 30 in the east, with a particularly high density around Vienna.

The Wachau

The Wachau is a popular holiday destination in Lower Austria.

It is known for its wine and numerous castles, palaces and monasteries. Melk Abbey is one of the largest and most beautiful baroque ensembles in Europe and is inhabited and managed by Benedictine monks. The apricot

The Wachau apricot is a speciality known and recognised throughout Europe.

It is even protected as a separate trade mark within the EU. The speciality of the Wachau apricot is its pretty plump shape and very fine aroma, which comes to the fore when it is processed into jam, brandy or liqueurs. Apricots are a particularly important ingredient in desserts, such as apricot dumplings or apricot cake. The apricot blossom lasts between 10 days and 3 weeks, depending on the weather in the Wachau. You can usually see this spectacle between mid-March and mid-April.

The poppy

The poppy village of Armschlag in the Waldviertel is a must-see place, especially when the poppies are in bloom from mid-June to the end of July. The landscape shines in a colourful sea of white, purple and red flowers. Experience a hike around the poppy seed village or try one of the many poppy seed specialities, such as a poppy seed tent.

Hardegg

The area around Hardegg is part of the Waldviertel and, as part of the district of Hollabrunn, belongs to the Weinviertel. To the north, Hardegg borders the Czech Republic via the River Thaya. The town of Hardegg itself - not including the incorporated villages - has a population of just 84 as of 1 January 2020, making it the smallest town in Austria.
