How do I increase the consistency of my strokes?
Have you ever practised with half turns? My students hate that. I think the reason is that they often don't know exactly what a half swing actually is. Is it a big swing at half speed or is it a shorter swing and therefore a shorter swing? I love half swings and like to torture my students with this swing. There is a simple reason for this: if you can master a half swing, you play much better golf. Let's get back to the question of what a half swing actually is: In the address position, imagine you are swinging along a clock face (with the club pointing to 6 o'clock). If you swing out to 9 o'clock and swing through to 3 o'clock, you have made a half swing. The left arm is extended as far as possible, the wrists are bent and you make half a body turn.
You will develop the best feeling for a half swing if you check yourself on video. Most of the time, the swing feels much smaller than it actually is! My students are always shocked at how far they really swing when I show them the recording.
Once you have mastered the half swing, you will love it too. It will help you a lot, especially around the green. It will also give you a lot of confidence in the field as a kind of transport shot. For me, there is no better feeling on the golf course than being able to control something. With a half swing, your impact will also improve. I always like to say that the moment of impact becomes "crisper".
Even with the top pros, we often see small, shorter swings. Especially when it comes to having control over a shot and therefore controlling the distance. What works well for the best players in the world will certainly help you too.
To emphasise it once again: A half swing is not just for short shots. On the fairway, you can hit a transport shot with a half swing using a medium iron. Or if you are playing in strong winds, a half swing can help you hit the ball flatter.
What improves most with the half swing is the moment of impact. So practise half swings (always with video control) and benefit twice over. You will get a better feel for the length for shorter distances and improve your impact moment considerably. It will suddenly feel nice and crisp and you will be surprised how far your balls will fly with half swings.
Don't think that if you swing further again, the ball will fly twice as far! But that's not the point, is it?
