Hybrid chip - Just let the ball roll
Difficult situations - simple solutions: Part 1
Golf is a game that teaches us to deal creatively with challenges. Sometimes a simple adjustment can significantly improve our game and boost our confidence. One example of this is the hybrid chip.
Every golfer knows the frustration of a chip rolling only a few centimetres because the club got stuck in the grass. However, such failures can be avoided with a clever club selection. Try a hybrid or rescue club!
A hybrid has less loft and only allows the ball to fly a short distance before it starts to roll. If your ball is on the front green or directly in front of it in the "first cut", you can use this shot to simply let the ball roll over the green towards the flag.
However, don't forget to practise this shot on the chipping green beforehand. Here you will learn to develop a feel for the distance the ball rolls - the crucial aspect of this shot.
How do you perform the hybrid chip? Use the hybrid chip when the ball has enough room to roll out to the flag. An ideal position is on the front green or directly in front of it, even if the ball is in slightly higher grass.
- Take your hybrid club and grip it a little shorter.
- Imagine you are putting the ball.
- Your stance is slightly narrower and the ball position is centred.
- The club is slightly more upright.
- Your wrists remain passive during the entire stroke.
- You swing the club straight and swing straight through the ball with a small movement.
By learning and applying this technique, you can find a simple solution to a typical challenge on the golf course. You will find that improving your game will boost your confidence on the course.
