World of ice giants in Werfen

Unique, huge, and rightly one of Salzburg's most popular sights for many decades.

The Eisriesenwelt is a labyrinth of caves with a total length of over 40 kilometres. There are various systems that create cave ice. The Eisriesenwelt is a dynamic ice cave. This means that the cave passages and fissures form a connection from lower-lying entrances to higher-lying openings that allow a draught of air - like in a chimney, for example.
Depending on the outside temperature, the temperature inside the mountain is either cooler or warmer, which causes a draught of air from top to bottom or vice versa due to the different specific gravity. This means that in winter, when the air inside the mountain is warmer than outside, cold air flows into the mountain and cools the lower part of the cave to below 0°C.

Hohenwerfen Fortress

Experience the Middle Ages up close.

The castle is over 900 years old and is situated on a steep rocky cone high above the Salzach Valley with a view over the surrounding mountain giants. Hohenwerfen Castle was built in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard. At the beginning, it was just a simple wooden structure, which was subsequently extended and reinforced. It was not until the 15th century that Hohenwerfen had reached roughly the size of today's main castle.

Liechtenstein Gorge

A natural spectacle

The Liechtenstein Gorge is one of the longest, deepest and most impressive gorges in the Alps. It fascinates with the mighty roar of the waterfall, the moss-covered rocks, a legendary atmosphere and rays of sunshine that create a rainbow in the fine water dust.

Mining museum & show tunnel on the Hochkönig

A weather-independent excursion programme in the village centre of Mühlbach am Hochkönig, in the Knappenheim cultural centre, is offered by the mining museum and the show gallery with a light railway. Here you will find evidence of 4,000 years of copper mining history. After a tour of the museum with its extensive mineralogy and changing special exhibition, you can experience interesting insights and experiences of mining from the early Bronze Age to modern times under expert guidance in the nearby show tunnel.
