The four pillars of good golf - equipment

Each of the four pillars is important. They can be seen as a mathematical equation:
Technique x Physical x Equipment x Mental = Success.

"Only when I can swing really well will I get the right clubs". I often hear this phrase, but unfortunately this approach is not particularly helpful. Have you decided to play golf regularly? Then you should get clubs that suit you: not just your height, but also your swing behaviour. Modern clubs are not only forgiving, they can also influence trajectories and soften slices.

However, it's not just about having modern clubs, but also having the right ones. There are a variety of options, especially when it comes to shafts. The weight strongly influences the feel of the swing. The flex influences the speed of the club head and the kick point influences the trajectory of the ball. The kick point determines where the shaft bends the most: closer to the club head or further up? Accordingly, the trajectory of the ball is higher or flatter. A good, well-fitting shaft can make the game much easier.

A good fitter will help you find clubs with the right characteristics for you. The following points can make a big difference in making your balls fly better:

  • The lie (angle between the shaft and the ground)
  • The loft (inclination of the club head): more or less
  • The shaft: weight and flexibility, material (steel or graphite)
  • The grip: thick or thin, hard or soft, colour

During a fitting, the ball flight data is analysed to find the optimum combination of club characteristics. Use this opportunity to recognise your "true" hitting distances. Knowing your distance will help you to make the right decisions on the course. Also use a rangefinder or GPS watch. Knowing the exact distance to the target will give you confidence.
As soon as you know your shot lengths, you must learn to call them up on the course with inner conviction. As soon as you start to doubt and believe that you won't make it, you tend to pick up a stronger club and that is not a long-term solution.

The pros work every week to find the best possible equipment and keep trying new things until they find the equipment that gives them the best confidence for the shot.
