The four pillars of good golf - Physique
Each of the four pillars is important. They can be seen as a mathematical equation:
Technique x Physical x Equipment x Mental = Success.
It is common knowledge that physical conditions influence the golf swing and the game of golf. But knowledge of one's own physical abilities is often underestimated. They can even get in the way of high expectations - the problem then lies in the expectations.
Have you ever had a sports medicine examination? A doctor can tell you exactly what your body can - or cannot - do. It's important to know your physical limits. Only then can you take helpful measures and pursue your golf goals with realistic expectations. Today's top players turn their hips less, but their shoulders more. This creates enormous body tension, which requires athleticism and mobility. Mobility that the average golfer simply doesn't have. So it's no wonder that the golf swing of an average player looks different to that of a professional.
A certain amount of basic strength is not only advantageous, but also important. Strong arms and hands help to minimise club twisting in thick rough, for example. This basic strength can be built up quickly with classic push-ups. However, the power of Rory McIlroy is a different calibre! A player like Rory McIlroy combines power and mobility perfectly. Just look at his follow-through and you'll know what I mean. Such power can only be built up with hard and professional work and training.
More attention should be paid to prevention. For many golfers, taking a painkiller is part of the pre-round routine. However, regular exercise can make a big difference. Strengthened core muscles also have many positive effects. Simple exercises such as the forearm support can help here.
Regular training sessions - however short they may be - not only serve as prevention, but also have a positive effect on fitness. Do you know those slumps in performance after 13 or 14 holes? When the body starts to flag, concentration also drops: our body wants to survive - there is no energy left for a concentrated shot. A snack with some nuts and dried fruit as well as sufficient fluids can sometimes work wonders.
Your awareness of your physical abilities has a direct influence on your mental strength. If you feel physically uncomfortable on the golf course, you will struggle to be mentally strong. It is important that you feel comfortable at your physical level and use your physical abilities in your golf game. Only then can you really improve and enjoy your golf game.
