Tips for the short game - Sophisticated optics

Training close to the course will help you to improve your routine and hone your pitching, chipping and putting skills. This will allow you to practice confidence and composure in various game situations that you would otherwise only experience during a round.

Here are some steps you should follow when practising close to the course:

  • Choose a landing point before each shot and visualise how the ball will behave in that situation.
  • Perform your routine before each shot, including alignment and preparation
  • Remove any pitch mark you leave during practice to keep the practice green in good condition.
  • Mark your ball before putting and take time to read the putt and determine your line.
  • Play the ball as if you were on the course to develop a feel for playing in real conditions.
  • Every stroke counts, giving you an accurate assessment of your performance.

When you stand in front of a bunker or water hazard, the situation can often seem quite overwhelming. The obstacle restricts your view of your target and the next shot looks extremely challenging. In this case, it can be very helpful to take a few steps around the bunker to better assess the situation. Often the view from one perspective can look very threatening, while from another perspective the situation looks absolutely manageable.

In this video, Frank Adamowicz shows his routine in visually challenging situations.
