What should I think about in the golf swing?

The biggest misunderstandings between pupil and coach occur when it comes to swing thoughts. If someone says after a golf lesson that they are completely confused by all the instructions and have too many thoughts in their head, this is a sign of poor communication. This is a sign of being overwhelmed!
If you have this feeling during training, you should definitely tell your pro. In this case, it is helpful to concentrate on one or a maximum of two points in your swing. It is not always possible to solve all problems at the same time - and a good trainer should realise this.

I fully agree with you that too many swing thoughts get in the way of good golf. Any professional player will confirm that. Sometimes I wonder how so many thoughts can arise in the first place. Golf magazines and online videos are teeming with golf tips. But just because something is technically correct doesn't mean it's right for you.

There are also many golfers who claim that they don't want to think about anything. That might work well for one or two shots. If you want to play consistently, you can't avoid thinking. After all, golf is all about constant improvement. So it makes sense to set yourself a specific mental focus and then apply this thought consistently. A good swing thought for the course, for example, is timing or rhythm in the swing.

On the golf course, you should concentrate on your routine in preparation for the shot. Think about where you want to hit. Consider the tendency of your typical ball flight curve. For example, if you have a slight tendency to slice, you should look for a target that gives you enough play to the right.

What you should never do: Thinking on the course about how you could beat the slice! The driving range is the right place to have several thoughts on one shot. That's where you should work on your technique - not on the course.

Positive thoughts are certainly not a disadvantage during a golf swing. Especially as it lasts around 1.5 seconds. That doesn't leave much room for thoughts.
