The swimming lakes Lottensee and Wildmoossee are a natural phenomenon that occurs sporadically: one moment it is there and you can enjoy a wonderful swim in it, the next it remains in its underground realm and does not show itself on the surface. It is impossible to predict with certainty exactly when it will appear or how large it will be. The farmers have a rule for this: “Lots of snow, lots of lake.” That may well be true, as the meltwater from the snow helps to increase the pressure in the underground karst systems, causing the water to gush out of the ground. In that case: be sure to have a dip and, feeling wonderfully refreshed, enjoy the marvellous natural surroundings!

The Möserer See natural swimming lake, at 1,295 metres above sea level, is somewhat more reliable. It warms up to 25 degrees in summer and is a popular destination even outside the swimming season, where you can find romantic seclusion in the woods and peace and quiet. Or how about a picnic on one of the many benches along the shore?

In this historic log cabin from the Gleirsch Valley in the Karwendel Nature Park, you can learn about the traditional way of life of loggers and about the development of timber use right up to the present day. In front of the museum is a spacious nature adventure playground, which offers plenty of room for little adventures.

Take the Nordkettenbahn cable car for a convenient journey to the viewpoint on the Nordkette, which you have admired from the Innsbruck-Igls Golf Club. From here, you’ll have a magnificent view over Innsbruck and into Austria’s largest nature park, the Karwendel Mountains.

Lynxes, eagles, wolves, bears and a further 2,000 Alpine animals can be admired at the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo, Europe’s highest-altitude zoo (at 750 metres above sea level). Dogs are not permitted here.

The Hungerburgbahn, a funicular railway, takes you from the city centre (Congress) up to the Hungerburg in just a few minutes. Change to the Seegrubenbahn, which takes 6 minutes to reach Seegrube station. Change to the gondola to Hafelekar (4 minutes). All stations on the Nordkettenbahn are architectural masterpieces, such as the Hungerburgbahn designed by Zaha Hadid.
