Rule 11: Ball is deflected on the green by an insect

Purpose of the rule: Rule 11 deals with what to do if the ball accidentally hits a person, animal, equipment or anything else on the court while the player is in motion. If this happens accidentally, it is not penalised and the player must normally accept the consequences, whether to his advantage or not, and play the ball from where it came to rest. Law 11 also restricts a player from deliberately taking action that affects where any ball might come to rest.

Previously , if the ball hit an animal on the green after a shot, the shot must be repeated without penalty.

New: This no longer applies. If the ball hits a worm or an insect, the shot counts and the ball continues to be played as it lies.

Useful information: Worms and insects are considered loose obstructive natural substances and may be removed from the line of play before putting.

Anyone who says we don't take the rules of golf too seriously - we're not playing "The Open" - is playing just any ball game, but certainly not golf.
